I've been following this genius Los Angeles-based representational painter for about two years. Having seen some of his work at his rep's gallery and his "The Paternal Suit" show at the Long Beach Museum of Art I am happy to say this beautiful uber quality publication does his work justice. Its forward and other commentary are easily digestible.
What's to say about this book? Hess is one of my favorite artists, his work and the book itself is gorgeous
Serving as a catalogue for a retrospective of the works of Los Angeles artist F. Scott Hess, this beautifully designed, completely satisfying survey of the works of one of America's more important quiet artists is an artwork in and of itself. Presented in a classy slipcover and published with many fully color saturated reproduction so Hess's masterworks, the book is accompanied by the writings of people with varied approaches to Hess' art - Mike McGee, the director of the gallery at California State University, Fullerton, Doug Harvey, Leah Ollman and John Seed - each essay informative and contributory to a full appreciation of Hess' highly respected art.Presented in chronological order, the book is full of many of Hess' finest works. Of course not every painting is included - his output since the beginning of his career is staggering - but most of the better known works are included as well as some rarely seen drawings and paintings. The biography section at the end of the book does well with the history, many exhibitions both one man and group types, but fails to list the many fine publications that have been written about his work.Having had the pleasure of presenting his paintings in both private gallery show and museum exhibition, this reviewer has known the artist for many years. His paintings, well though they are presented in this impressive volume, are so rich in color, in manipulation of light and shadow, of controversial subject matter, and so strikingly well executed that it is difficult to understand why he is not better recognized as one of the finest figurative painters of this country. Perhaps with the publication of this book that reputation will become more widely acknowledged. F. Scott Hess is not only an extraordinarily gifted painter, he is also a compassionate, intelligent, warmly approachable artist of the first rank. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 15
